What the Federal Budget means for the Education sector

May 10: Following the release of the 2011 Federal Budget, industry experts share their instant views on what implications the budget will have on the education sector:

MELISSA COADE, VICE PRESIDENT, EDUCATION, AUSTRALIAN LAW STUDENTS ASSOCIATION

“There seems to be an emphasis on access to education. ALSA fully supports any policy … which addresses access to education. We do feel at this stage of the game that the announcement of a $1.2 billion investment to fund growth in the higher education sector is grossly misplaced. This is because tertiary education is not really in the position to adequately absorb and support these students [in up to 480,000 more undergraduate places] … ALSA is in strong favour of supporting quality over quantity.”

“ALSA has been engaged in a long-standing battle advocating the allocation of desperately needed funds for law schools and the more rational sharing of the funds between government and students …

"Some of the rhetoric that comes through in the budget speech and the allocated funds for higher education send an alarming message to us, because it says that our concerns will not be addressed, and all the concerns that we raised throughout our submissions to government will possibly go unheard.”
