LexisNexis Executive Gains Global Recognition for access to justice and human rights projects

Veronica Rios named finalist in Maverick of the Year category in the 14th annual Stevie Awards for Women in Business

Sydney, 9 November 2017: LexisNexis® is pleased to announce that Veronica Rios, Executive Manager of Content & Rule of Law, was named a Finalist in ‘Maverick of the Year’ category in the global Stevie® Awards for Women in Business.

This category recognises the achievements of outstanding female individuals who have affected positive change on their companies and/or industries, and this nomination specifically recognises the achievements of ‘Rule of Law’ initiatives led by Ms Rios.

Since 2015, Ms Rios has been responsible for driving initiatives that assist developing and developed nations within the Asia Pacific region to strengthen the rule of law by leveraging the expertise and resources of LexisNexis.

“For LexisNexis, advancing the rule of law is a foundational principle that underpins all of our work. By promoting the rule of law, we are able to give the most vulnerable people in society a chance to be heard and empowered.

“Increasing access to justice and protecting human rights creates greater safety and stability for people within their own countries. It also produces an environment that is conducive to the successful operation of businesses, generating positive economic outcomes for the members of those communities,” said Ms Rios.

Through key projects led by Ms Rios, LexisNexis has created a tangible impact on quality of life for people in the Asia Pacific region. These include:

  • Modern Slavery Act Advocacy with Freedom Hub

A submission to the Australian Parliamentary Inquiry to advocate for the establishment of a Modern Slavery Act in Australia, by promoting greater responsibility by businesses through a 'Business for Rule of Law' framework and global supply chain standards.

  • RightsApp with the Australian Human Rights Commission

RightsApp is a global-first free reference guide that catalogues key international human rights declarations and conventions in a mobile application, that is easily accessible and user-friendly for those within and outside the legal profession.

  • Juris Pilot and the Union Attorney General's Office (UAGO)

Leading a team of senior legal professionals to conduct intensive training on international contract law to more than 50 public prosecutors in Myanmar from the UAGO and other government ministries, who are representing the newly emerging democratic government in the international arena.

Simon Wilkins, General Manager of LexisNexis Australia congratulates Ms Rios for being recognised by such a distinguished panel.

“Veronica’s expertise in enabling access to laws has allowed her to directly affect society in a positive way, creating a structure for businesses to flourish and succeed.

“We are committed to increasing the protection of the rule of law to help all people in need both within Australia and across the broader APAC region,” said Mr Wilkins.

More than 1,500 entries were submitted this year for consideration in more than 90 categories. Finalists were chosen by more than 170 professionals worldwide serving on five specialized judging committees.  Jurors’ average scores will also determine the Gold, Silver and Bronze Stevie Award placements from among the finalists, which will be revealed at the November 17 event in New York.
