LexisNexis Congratulates Thuli Madonsela
2017 Commonwealth Law Conference Rule of Law Award Winner
Melbourne, 24 February 2017: LexisNexis® congratulates Ms Thuli Madonsela as the recipient of the 3rd Commonwealth Law Conference Rule of Law Award, presented in conjunction with the Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA).
Advocate Madonsela has been recognised as this year's recipient for her activism in embodying truth and justice during her seven years as a Public Protector in South Africa. She exemplified the principles of the Rule of Law Award through her pursuit to make access to justice a reality for her nation, as well as promoting equality under the law.
The judging panel noted Advocate Madonsela's dedication to the rule of law through her investigatory role, in the 'State of Capture' investigation that was finalised during her last week in office in mid-October 2016.
Alexander Ward, President of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association said: "Thuli Madonsela has remained dedicated to the pursuit of judicial integrity despite being threatened, undermined and scrutinised in the course of her work. She has demonstrated to ordinary South Africans that there is hope for justice to prevail."
The Rule of Law Award was developed in 2013 through a partnership between the CLA and LexisNexis as a biennial award to recognise an individual, institution, firm or lawyers who have made an outstanding contribution to the rule of law which has an impact both within their own country and to the broader Commonwealth. Previous winners have included Robin Sully of Canada (2013) and Upul Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka (2015).
"LexisNexis is extremely proud of its partnership with the CLA on this prestigious award. We congratulate and commend Ms Madonsela for her commitment and dedication," says Ian McDougall, EVP and General Counsel, LexisNexis Legal & Professional, who will also be speaking at the Commonwealth Law Conference on the role and importance of the business community to actively engage in advancing the rule of law for economic and social development.
"We also strive to advance the rule of law through our work at LexisNexis and we hope this award will inspire lawyers to pursue these same values. We are honoured to recognise Ms Madonsela for her tireless commitment to creating a better society," Mr McDougall added.
The Award will be presented at the closing ceremony of the 20th Commonwealth Law Conference that will be held in Melbourne on 24 March 2017.
