2015 Australian Human Rights Medal Winner

LexisNexis Pacific congratulates Peter Greste on winning the prestigious 2015 Australian Human Rights Medal, sponsored by LexisNexis.

Peter was selected as this year's winner for his advocacy for freedom of speech and a free media following his arrest and detention for 400 days in Egypt on a charge or terrorism-related offences that was widely criticized around the world for the lack of evidence and political issues involved in the case.

Since his release, Peter has made numerous public appearances campaigning for the release of his colleagues and speaking about the importance of a free and unencumbered media in properly functioning democracy.

Chosen from a shortlist of five inspiring individuals including Maha Krayem Abdo, Rodney Croome, Professor Pat Dudgeon and Adam Goodes, the Human Rights Medal recognises individual Australians who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to freedom, justice and equality.

Jo Beckett, General Manager of LexisNexis Australia says: "We would like to congratulate Peter on his tireless drive to advocate for freedom of speech and a free media around the world. His willingness to use such a terrifying personal ordeal to advance this cause and help his colleagues is very honourable. We would also like to congratulate all finalists who show incredible commitment to advancing human rights in Australia and across the world".

LexisNexis has also won an Australian Business Award this year for its commitment to advancing the Rule of Law across the Pacific, a comprehensive program of support which includes partnering with governments and non-profit organisations to make justice systems more efficient and transparent; as well as documenting and making accessible local, national and international laws to citizens and professionals, essential to the proper administration of justice in the region. In addition, as a founding member of the United National Global Compact, LexisNexis led contributions to the new Business for Rule of Law Global Framework.
