QLD: Free and confidential support for First Nations families and children
The Government has launched an ongoing state-wide campaign to encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families to access free Family Wellbeing Services, said Queensland Minister for Child Safety Craig Crawford. Family Wellbeing Services help Indigenous parents to manage the everyday issues of raising a family, like sending kids to school, budgeting to make ends meet and learning how to prepare affordable and healthy meals. Parents can also speak with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Family Wellbeing Services about complex issues like domestic and family violence, gambling and alcohol misuse. Evidence shows early intervention like Family Wellbeing Services is paying off with children being kept out of the statutory child protection system.

Indigenous rangers provide road map for voice success
'Last month, I had the honour of meeting with a group of Indigenous Rangers and elders who manage our environment in the Katiti-Petermann Indigenous Protected Area. Spending a day there, watching the Tjakura, Mala and Kaltukatjara Rangers work in the central desert, it was clear that no one knows the land like they do, and no one is better placed to care for it than they are. As study after study has shown, our Indigenous Rangers program delivers better outcomes across the board. That means stronger protection for native plants and animals, more employment for local people, greater economic opportunities for remote towns,' said Minister for the Environment and Water Tanya Plibersek.

First Nations mental health and wellbeing support
'This year, Australia will hold a referendum to decide whether to change the Constitution to establish an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice (the Voice). The Voice would be an independent and permanent advisory body. It would give advice to the Australian Parliament and Government on matters that affect the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The national conversation on the Voice in Australia might negatively affect the mental health and wellbeing of some First Nations peoples. People will have different opinions about the Voice, which could lead to difficult conversations with family, friends and colleagues,' said the Department of Health and Aged Care.

The letters, written by primary school children, were put together on pieces of paper shaped like a megaphone with words referencing the nation's colonial past. Time to enrol: Get 'vote-ready' Australia
With the 2023 referendum announced for Saturday 14 October it's now time for Australians to make sure they are enrolled and ready to vote, said the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC). Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers said that all Australian citizens aged 18 years and over are required by law to enrol and vote in the first referendum in nearly a quarter of a century. 'As a writ has not been issued as yet, a deadline has not been set for the close of rolls at this stage,' Mr Rogers said. 'However, the instruction is simple - if Australians are unsure of the status of their enrolment, they should jump on the AEC website now and make sure their details are up to date.'

Diverse communities will support The Voice if they are informed
Migrant and refugee settlement agency AMES Australia has welcomed the announcement of an Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum to be held on October 14. The announcement follows a survey that shows newly arrived migrants and refugees in Australia are largely unaware and confused about the proposal to create an Indigenous Voice to Parliament, a new survey has found. An overwhelming majority of newcomers know little about The Voice proposal or the upcoming referendum and the change it would mean to Australia's constitution. But the survey found that when given information about The Voice, migrant and refugee communities are much more likely to support it.

'Indeed 11 of the 15 Closing the Gap targets are not on track, and shamefully some are actually going backwards. First Nations people continue to have lower life expectancies, lower educational outcomes, and higher suicide rates than non-Indigenous Australians. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people using aged care
Australian Institute of Health & Welfare (AIHW)

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (First Nations) people may have different care needs in older age than non-Indigenous Australians. Although First Nations people can and do use mainstream aged care services, there is also a need for services tailored to the specific needs of First Nations people. The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flexible Aged Care (NATSIFAC) Program is an additional care type offered in Australia, aimed at providing care that is culturally safe and allows individuals to maintain their strong connections with home, community and country.

Polling - Voice voting intention - South Australia
The Australia Institute

The Australia Institute surveyed a representative sample of 605 South Australians about the upcoming Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice referendum. Respondents were told that this year, a referendum will be held on the question of whether to enshrine an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice in the Constitution. They were also told the Voice would be able to make representations to the Parliament and the Executive Government of the Commonwealth on matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The MJA supports an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament
Medical Journal of Australia (MJA)

We are at a time when there have never been better opportunities to translate health policies, practices and medical research into improvements for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. Critical to these efforts is a health and research system - including in the publishing sector - that recognises the importance of Indigenous leadership in producing and implementing health care and research in order to magnify research benefits across the communities it serves.1 However, as noted by Michelle Kennedy and Janine Mohamed from the Lowitja Institute, research requires appropriate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ethical governance.
