How antibodies make the switch to better immunity
Researchers have uncovered how antibodies that are specialised to different immune 'disposal systems' become the dominant form in the bloodstream, a process which is critical to the immune system's ability to destroy pathogens and a key objective for the development of effective vaccines. Findings led by the Garvan Institute of Medical Research have revealed this new form of antibody selection happens in germinal centres - the body's 'antibody tuning centres' located in lymphoid organs such as the lymph nodes, spleen and tonsils.

Calling 000 when chest pain hits vital to better outcomes
The value of calling an ambulance when chest pain strikes, rather than arranging your own transport, has been confirmed by new research published by the Medical Journal of Australia (MJA). Researchers led by Professor David Brieger, Professor of Cardiology at Concord Repatriation Hospital in Sydney, and Dr Eleanor Redwood, a Basic Physician Trainee at Prince of Wales Hospital and Community Health Services, analysed data on patients with confirmed ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) from 43 hospitals.

Perils of recording telehealth consultations
The COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated rapid uptake and use of telehealth, unmasking a 'number of concerns potentially not previously contemplated by clinicians, patients and legislators', according to the authors of an Ethics and Law article published by the MJA. 'Recording of clinical conversations or processes may enhance patient and clinician participation, self-reference, research, education and funding,' wrote the authors, led by Dr Caitlin Farmer, a radiology registrar at Monash Health, and Dr Patrick Mahar, a dermatologist at the Skin Health Institute and the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne.

Opioid Prescribing Practices Project - Key Outcomes
Department of Health

The Australian Government has taken a targeted approach to reduce harm to patients from inappropriate opioid use by raising general practitioner (GP) awareness and supporting clinically appropriate prescribing. The Department of Health designed and evaluated a project through a randomised controlled trial (RCT) to determine whether GPs who had high rates of opioid prescribing would reduce their prescribing when sent a letter informed by behavioural insights principles about their prescribing patterns.

Starting materials for use in manufacturing therapeutic goods are exempt goods, unless they are pre-packaged for supply for other therapeutic purposes or are formulated as a dosage form. This means that the TG Act allows the importation, manufacture, supply or exportation of starting materials (including active pharmaceutical ingredients) unless they are in a form that can be given to a patient.

Submission to House Select Committee on Mental Health & Suicide Prevention
Department of Health

The provision of mental health services is the responsibility of all governments and is provided through a range of publicly and privately funded means. A 'stepped care' approach to the provision of care recognises a 'no one-size fits all' approach and forms the accepted basis of targeting services across governments, mental health experts and service providers. Stepped care is an evidence-base, staged system with a hierarchy of interventions from least to most intensive, which can be matched to an individual's needs.

Inquiry into Mental Health and Suicide Prevention - Interim Report
Reps Select Committee on Mental Health & Suicide Prevention

Mental health issues impact everyone at some point in their life. Mental illness may be episodic, acute or chronic, and may affect an individual, a family member, friend or colleague, or someone met in a chance encounter. The negative impact that COVID-19 might have on mental health was recognised from the outset, where concern came not only from fear of contracting the virus, but also the various measures implemented seeking to contain its spread and reduce its transmission.

Alcohol and other drug treatment services in Australia: key findings
Australian Institute of Health & Welfare (AIHW)

In 2019-20, 1,258 publicly funded alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment agencies provided just over 237,500 treatment episodes to an estimated 139,000 clients. The four most common drugs that led clients to seek treatment for their own drug use were alcohol (34% of all treatment episodes), amphetamines (28%), cannabis (18%) and heroin (5.1%). Almost two-thirds (64%) of all clients receiving treatment were male, and the median age of clients was 35 years.

Aged care - the way forward
Australian Aged Care Collaboration (AACC)

Australia's population is ageing. Currently 2% of the Australian population is aged over 85 but this is projected to grow to more than 1.5 million people, or 3.7% of the population, by 2058. That's why genuine reform must start now because if it doesn't the challenge will only grow, and the current generation of older people and future generations will continue to bear the consequences of a lack of care.
