VIC: Fast-tracked mental health support for Victorians in need
Victoria's mental health system will receive nearly $60 million in an additional boost to get more Victorians support when they need it - now and after the pandemic is over and its effects are still being felt - as they continue to work together to fight this deadly virus, said Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews. Building increased system capacity will be vital to the wellbeing of all Victorians as the challenges of the global pandemic hit hard for some, especially those people already living with mental ill health, said Victorian Minister for Mental Health Martin Foley.

WA: Review into mental health services for children and adolescents
WA Minister for Mental Health Roger Cook has asked the Chief Psychiatrist to undertake a targeted, independent review into how the public mental health system cared for 13-year-old Kate Savage, who recently passed away. The review will focus on the clinical care, and comment on how to improve mental health services for young people across inpatient and community-based clinical services. The findings of the review will form part of the broader Young People Priority Framework, already underway by the Mental Health Commission, which will analyse and make recommendations for young people, aged 12 to 24, across both the public health system and non-government services.

Mental health program to support the hardworking commercial fishers
Australia's first industry-specific mental health program to support commercial fishers is now underway with a new pilot program starting in three iconic fishing communities. The Government is investing $600,000 for Seafood Industry Australia to deliver a package of mental health initiatives for the seafood community. The program will be piloted in industry-selected regions including Darwin, Northern Territory, Lakes Entrance, Victoria and Newcastle, New South Wales. Assistant Minister for Forestry and Fisheries Jonno Duniam said studies had shown a range of factors including job insecurity had led to poor levels of mental health among Australian commercial fishers.

Social housing can be a step toward mental health reform
Secure housing is fundamental to improving mental health, said Shadow Minister for Housing and Homelessness Jason Clare. The Government cannot deny the link between secure housing and better mental health outcomes for Australians. The Productivity Commission's draft report into mental health highlighted the importance of non-health services, including housing, in preventing mental ill health and improving recovery, said Shadow Assistant Minister for Mental Health Emma McBride. Organisations such as Wesley Mission and the NSW Mental Health Coordinating Council have reported the desperate need for adequate housing as the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the number of people at risk of mental ill health and homelessness.

VIC: Supporting students through the pandemic
For Victorian students in their final years of school, as well as their parents, carers, families and teachers - this has been a year like no other, said Victorian Premier Andrews. That's why the Victorian State Government is announcing more support for VCE students and further mental health resources for young people struggling with this pandemic, said Victorian Minister for Education James Merlino. Every Victorian student will be individually assessed, and any adverse impacts of coronavirus will be reflected in ATAR rankings as part of a wide-ranging process to ensure fair and accurate results in this unprecedented year of school - taking a huge mental load off students and their families as they head towards exams.

Study affirms safety of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine
A new large-scale study that analyses more than 11 years' worth of surveillance data has affirmed the safety of quadrivalent human papillomavirus vaccine (4vHPV) for both boys and girls. The study, published in the journal Vaccine, examined all adverse events following immunisation with 4vHPV reported to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) from 2007 to 2017. The study included detailed examination of data from 2 years' worth of enhanced surveillance, which was implemented when 4vHPV was first introduced for boys in 2013. The analysis did not reveal any new or concerning safety issues.

Researchers target immune system to treat rare cancer
A genetic diagnosis led to the successful treatment of a 52-year old man, guiding immune therapy for his rare cancer and providing relief after a lifetime of unexplained immune symptoms. Researchers led by A/Prof Tri Phan at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, analysed the genome of Sydney man Michael, to discover his symptoms were caused by a variant in an immune gene that also revealed an existing medication to be an effective treatment. By administering a common immunosuppressant drug used to prevent organ rejection, A/Prof Phan was able to rebalance Michael's immune system and treat his Kaposi's sarcoma, a rare cancer which affects the lymph tissues in some people with compromised immune systems.

VIC: Securing the future of regenerative medicine in Victoria
The Victorian Government is growing the state's world-leading medical research sector, securing the retention of the national headquarters of the Centre for Commercialisation of Regenerative Medicine (CCRM) Australia. CCRM speeds up the commercialisation of regenerative medicine technologies and cell-based therapies to make them available to Victorians, and the world, sooner. Retaining CCRM Australia's national HQ in Melbourne will allow Victoria to build upon its position as Australia's undisputed leader in research and development of regenerative medicines and pharmaceuticals, said Victorian Minister for Innovation, Medical Research and the Digital Economy Jaala Pulford.

Application process open for $45 million for regional cancer centres
Public and private service providers are invited to apply for grants totalling $45.5 million, to develop regional radiation treatment centres for local cancer patients in ten regions across four states, said Minister for Health Greg Hunt. The Government is providing the funding to improve access to radiation therapy for thousands of cancer patients in rural and regional areas of New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia. Currently, cancer patients in these areas have to travel to major centres to obtain their radiation therapy. This can be an exhausting and expensive process, adding to the stress of a cancer diagnosis on the individual, their family and carers.

Extend Medicare telehealth items until March
The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has written to Minister for Health Greg Hunt, calling on the Government to extend temporary telehealth arrangements under Medicare that have supported patients to have a consultation with their doctor either over the phone or by video. These arrangements, which were put in place as part of the Government's COVID-19 response, are due to end on 30 September. 'The AMA has long advocated for Medicare-subsidised telehealth consultations, and the COVID-19 arrangements have shown the value of telehealth,' AMA President, Dr Omar Khorshid, said. 'They have supported the provision of care during these very difficult times and contributed to efforts to contain the spread of the virus.'

Models of Integrated Care, Health and Housing Research Paper 7
Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety

To assist the Royal Commission, this report provides an overview and analysis of integrated models of care for older people, as they relate to health care, social care, and housing or accommodation in Australia. Integrated care is a nebulous term that can mean different things to different people. Fundamentally it refers to strategies aimed at overcoming fragmentation between different services and sectors as a way of improving the health and wellbeing of clients, client satisfaction with services, and the efficiency and long-term sustainability of health and aged care systems.

A framework for monitoring overweight and obesity in Australia
Australian Institute of Health & Welfare (AIHW)

This report describes a conceptual framework for monitoring overweight and obesity in Australia. At a national level, monitoring is important to understand the health of the population and the need for treatment and services. The objective of a national monitoring framework for overweight and obesity is to guide reporting on prevalence, risk factors, treatment and management, as well as impacts (such as burden of disease) in Australia, across population groups and over time. This framework will support national policy development and public health initiatives.

Overweight and obesity in Australia: an updated birth cohort analysis
Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW)

Excess body weight among adults is a risk factor for several chronic conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers. Children and adolescents who are overweight or obese are more likely to become adults who are obese than children and adolescents of a normal weight. The increased obesity prevalence among those born more recently, at younger ages especially, has potentially significant implications-it could result in earlier onset of obesity-related chronic conditions, higher health-care costs, impacts on workforce productivity, greater prevalence of obesity later in life and increased risk of mortality.
