Major Announcements

A Voice to Parliament lost
The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) has expressed its deep disappointment at the Voice referendum result. The ANMF was strongly in favour of a Voice to Parliament as a genuine pathway to Closing the Gap and to finally finding meaningful strategies for improving health outcomes for First Nations peoples and communities. 'Firstly and most importantly, we want to acknowledge First Nations activists, peoples and communities, who have fought for change for so long and who led this campaign with such strength and commitment, and whose resolve, despite the result, has started a conversation that will lead to a better future for Australia.'

BCA response to the Voice to Parliament Referendum result
The Business Council of Australia (BCA) has always supported the opportunity for all Australians to fully enjoy the benefits of Australian prosperity, Business Council chief executive Bran Black said. 'Our members are, and remain, committed to the social, cultural and economic prosperity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.' 'We have translated that commitment into action through Reconciliation Action Plans, by being major employers of Indigenous Australians and through investing in communities.' 'Our landmark Raising the Bar initiative has contributed to an Indigenous business sector which is estimated to add up to $12 billion to the Australian economy.'

A day of sadness and reflection
'The national referendum delivered a sobering result. Not the outcome hoped for by all of us supporting the Uluru Statement from the Heart and who campaigned to change the constitution to recognise First Nations people by establishing the Voice to Parliament. It is a moment of deep reflection as once again, our Aboriginal and Torres Islander communities have responded with grace, kindness, and resilience. Many of them have waited and worked a lifetime for change, and this is a heartbreaking outcome. We acknowledge the incredible strength and leadership of First Nations leaders,' said Federation of Ethnic Communities' Councils of Australia (FECCA).

Greens call for $250m Truth Commission in wake of misinformation campaign
'Following a corrosive misinformation campaign led by Peter Dutton, the Federal Government must lay the groundwork for lasting First Nations justice through a $250 million commitment to a Truth and Justice commission,' Leader of the Greens Adam Bandt said. National truth processes played a vital part in healing processes in Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. Victoria established the Yoorrook Justice Commission in May 2021 to hear, record and address the truths about First Peoples' experiences of colonisation in Victoria from 1788 to now, said Greens spokesperson for First Nations, Senator Dorinda Cox.

Senator Lidia Thorpe reminds us that the struggle for real change and justice continues and invites us to embark on a journey to Treaty
Following a No outcome, Senator for Victoria Lidia Thorpe reminds us that this is a win for the Blak Sovereign Movement, a win for the Sovereign rights of First Peoples to Self- Determine their own destiny, and do not wish to be part of the racist colonial constitution. Senator Lidia Thorpe has presented a clear way forward for this country and encourages everyone, regardless of how they voted, to join her and the Blak Sovereign Movement on a journey of healing and Truth-telling.

ACTU reaffirms commitment to justice for First Nations peoples
'The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) reaffirms our strong, unwavering support for Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and we stand in solidarity with them in their ongoing fight for justice, and against discrimination and profound disadvantage. The union movement has stood with First Nations peoples throughout this campaign, as we have for recognition of citizenship, an apology for the Stolen Generations, the return of stolen wages, and in struggles for land rights.'

ACN calls for respect and support in wake of Referendum outcome
The Australian College of Nursing (ACN) is calling on all Australians to respect and support one another in the wake of the defeat of the First Nations Voice to Parliament Referendum. ACN CEO Adjunct Professor Kylie Ward FACN said the failure of the YES vote will have an immediate devastating impact on the mental health and wellbeing of millions of Australians - especially First Nations Australians - who have campaigned for years for the Uluru Statement from the Heart and the First Nations Voice to Parliament.

Hard truths remain despite Voice to Parliament's No result
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples must have a say in the policies that shape their health outcomes, regardless of the Voice to Parliament referendum result. Australian Medical Association (AMA) President Professor Steve Robson said it was crucial for Australia to move forward sensitively following the referendum's 'No' outcome. 'We have seen, at times, difficult debate during the Voice to Parliament campaign, which will have had a significant impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,' Professor Robson said. 'We need to be conscious of that as we talk about how to move forward and genuinely tackle the worrying disparity in health outcomes among First Nations communities.'

Outcome of Voice Referendum
'The nation will be hurt by the defeat of this referendum. Yet this is not the end of reconciliation. This was not a vote against Indigenous people. Reconciliation with Australia's First People sits amongst the nation's highest priorities. This referendum, no matter how well intentioned, has produced a disappointing but predictable result. This is not a time for recriminations, but it is critical that we learn the lessons from this undertaking. As pointed out during 2022 and 2023, a successful product was only going to be shaped by a coherent, collaborative and centrist process,' said Senator for NSW Andrew Bragg.

The political power play: What does siding with No really means for Australians
'In the debate surrounding the Aboriginal Voice referendum, a narrative has emerged from the Prime Minister and other prominent figures, painting a black-and-white picture: If you're voting 'No', you're siding with Senator Pauline Hanson. This Prime Ministerial dichotomy is setting a decisive stage, and with recent polls indicating that a significant portion of Australians may indeed vote 'No', the implications are worth discussing. The continuous association of the 'No' vote with Senator Hanson by the Prime Minister and even the Minister for Aboriginal Australians exposes that a considerable part of the nation agrees with Pauline's perspectives,' said One Nation.

NSW: Once-in-a-generation chance to recognise and hear the Voice of Australia's First Peoples
'Today we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Australian Constitution and enshrine a Voice to advise Government. Recognising Australia's First Peoples and the thousands of years of continuous culture and history they hold in our nation's founding document is a chance we cannot miss. Establishing a Voice will enshrine this recognition giving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples a seat at the table to better inform and improve policies affecting the life of Aboriginal people. This body will give independent advice to decision-makers, on the issues affecting Indigenous communities,' said NSW Premier Chris Minns and NSW Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, David Harris.

Statement from Anglicare Australia to the Anglican community
Following the National Conference in Cairns, Anglicare Australia calls on all Australians to vote YES on October 14. 'The Anglicare Australia Conference met on the lands and waters of the Gimuy-Walubarra, Yirranydji and Yidingi peoples,' said Anglicare Australia. 'We heard from Elders and First Nation Leaders from across Australia We heard their call for a voice, the call for justice and the extended hand of reconciliation expressed generously in the Uluru Statement from the Heart. Anglicare Australia asks all Australians to accept the generous invitation from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to recognise the First Peoples of Australia, through enshrining a Voice to Parliament in our Constitution.'

Vote Yes for effective policy design
'How do you create policy which achieves lasting positive outcomes? You include the voices of those with lived experience,' said Science and Technology Australia (STA). STA President-elect Professor Sharath Sriram writes that this is why he'll be voting 'Yes' in Saturday's Referendum. 'It's a common cry from researchers: why isn't policy based on the very best evidence? How does policy so often end up uninformed by the lived experiences and expertise of the people most affected by it? It's the kind of thing that makes evidence-based researchers frustrated and disillusioned. That's why I'll be voting 'Yes' in the October 14 referendum.'

Senator Thorpe clarifies her remarks on what needs to happen beyond the Voice Referendum
Following the interview on ABC's RN Drive, Senator Lidia Thorpe wishes to clarify her remarks on what ought to occur in the event of a No outcome in the referendum. 'My comments must be taken in the context of my consistent position that Truth and Treaty are the first steps that must be taken to bring peace to this land,' said Senator Thorpe, Gunnai, Gunditjmara and Djab Wurrung woman and independent Victorian Senator representing the Blak Sovereign Movement. 'I want to make it clear that I do not support the Voice proposed by the government.'

Yes vote and emergency action can turn around remote education train wreck
The Central Land Council (CLC) has called on the federal government to act quickly and decisively to end the Northern Territory's remote education crisis. We need federal action to prevent a total collapse of the NT's remote government education system which is starved of funds and unable to support the needs of all children,' CLC chief executive Les Turner said. 'We call on the Australian Government to bridge the scandalous education gap with an immediate emergency equity package that ensures our students are funded to the same level as students in the rest of the country from the start of next school year.'

Nurses & midwives say Yes to a Voice to Parliament
'Members of the ANMF are supporting a First Nations Voice to Parliament - as a pathway to ensuring we have the very best health outcomes for the whole community.' Speaking ahead of a 'Health Workers for Yes' rally in Adelaide, ANMF Federal Secretary Annie Butler said the Voice was a natural extension of person-centred care, a central tenet of health care, which ensures people are involved and supported to have control over their own care to lead to better outcomes. 'As health experts, our core business is ensuring the health and wellbeing of all Australians across the community.'

The latest read from Roy Morgan surveying conducted up until Sunday shows 50% of Australians say they will vote 'No', or are leaning towards voting 'No', to establish an 'Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice' compared to 45% that say they would vote 'Yes', or are leaning towards voting 'Yes', leaving only 5% of respondents that are still undecided. 'Australians will vote 'Yes' or 'No' in the Referendum to recognise First Peoples in our Constitution and establish the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament.' Allies for Uluru, a 300 member strong cross-sector collaboration, calls on all Australians to accept the invitation of the Uluru Statement from the Heart to walk together for a better future, and vote 'Yes'. VIC: Joint statement from Meena Singh, Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People, and Liana Buchanan, Principal Commissioner for Children and Young People on the National Referendum on an Indigenous Voice to Parliament
'We, Victoria's Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People and Principal Commissioner for Children and Young People, will be voting 'Yes' at the forthcoming referendum to support Constitutional change recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and creating an Indigenous Voice to Parliament. We will be voting 'Yes' in light of the compelling benefits for First Nations children and young people, and in acknowledgment of the power of the voices of children and young people to address the issues they face in Australia.'

Robert Thorpe v Commonwealth
Aboriginal Elder Robbie Thorpe is demanding an injunction to stop the referendum on Saturday 14 October 2023, said 3CR Radical Radio. Chief Justice Susan Kiefe has considered Robbie's Writ 12.10.2023 and it is presently under review. 'We're hoping for a favourable ruling and that the Chief Justice is able to hear what we say about our law and our rights,' Robert Thorpe said. 'The referendum is an attack on Aboriginal Sovereignty. A majority of the population voting on an issues that doesn't affect them before we have been consulted is racist.' 'This could affect the validity of the election', Robert Thorpe said.

National protests to stop black deaths in custody
Saturday 7 October will be a national day of action to end deaths in custody. First Nations activists and supporters will be hosting rallies happening across the continent in Melbourne, Boorloo/Perth, Meanjin/Brisbane, and Kaurna/Adelaide. The rallies will be calling on governments to implement in full all recommendations from the 1991 Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (RCIADIC). Senator for Victoria Lidia Thorpe is throwing her support behind the day of action, and has initiated an online petition calling on federal, state and territory governments to fully implement all recommendations from the Royal Commission. The petition highlights a number of steps that the federal government could take immediately to end deaths in custody.

Senator for Victoria Lidia Thorpe, Traditional Owner Uncle Ian Carter and Blak Sovereign Movement member Natasha Wanganeen call for immediate action to cease all works in the area and return the ancestral bones to the ground. Indigenous science must be a standalone national science priority
InnovationAus has reported that Indigenous knowledge has been omitted as a standalone priority from a draft version of Australia's new national science and research priorities, creating a 'massive gap' that experts say will limit funding for an already under-resourced and under-utilised area. Indigenous researchers and a peak group for scientists are now calling for a late change to the year- long update process that would make the elevation and investment in First Nations perspectives on science, technology and innovation a standalone priority within the new science strategy.

Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA)

Publishing a range of information held by the TSRA provides transparency about the TSRA's processes and policies. The purpose of this Agency Plan is to:
- assist the TSRA in planning and administering its IPS entry;
- facilitate public consultation about that contribution; and
- show what information the TSRA proposes to publish, how and to whom the information will be
published and how the TSRA will otherwise comply with its IPS requirements (s 8(1)).

'A constitutionally enshrined Voice is the greatest opportunity right now to contribute to meaningful progress on closing the gap on Indigenous health, wellbeing and life expectancy,' said Palawa man and University of Tasmania Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Ian Anderson, who co-authored the piece.
