NSW must release updated modelling showing impact of easing COVID restrictions on health system
The Australian Medical Association (AMA) said the New South Wales Government's plan to start reopening from the COVID-19 lockdown lacked sufficient detail, including any modelling of future case numbers and health system impacts. AMA President Dr Omar Khorshid and NSW State President Dr Danielle McMullen said that although the NSW Government stated it was following the Doherty modelling prepared for National Cabinet, it seemed to have ignored warnings that easing restrictions when contact tracing systems were already overwhelmed would lead to higher case numbers and a greater burden on the health system.

Labor misleads on vaccines again
'Contrary to Labor's claims, the Australian Government was working with Pfizer and other pharmaceutical companies from early in the pandemic on vaccine purchase, including direct discussions with Pfizer prior to them allowing formal commencement of negotiations. Labor is again seeking to undermine the vaccination program, just as Australians are playing their part, rolling up their sleeves and hitting key vaccination targets to bring the lock downs to an end. Mark Butler is like a broken record, trying to re-hash claims which have already been discredited,' said Minister for Health and Aged Care Greg Hunt.

Unlike lifting aged care workers' wages and ensuring aged care facilities have nurses on staff 24/7, privatising the assessment workforce was not a recommendation of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety. Mental Health

9 September

R U OK? Day has been happening since 2009, but this year it is more important than ever before.
Research has shown that around 22% of Australians don't reach out to check on the people around them because there hasn't been an occasion where they felt someone needed their help. However, a regular check in, or just starting the conversation - even when someone is not visibly distressed or in crisis - can make a real difference. The conversation about mental health need not be difficult, it is as simple as asking if someone is okay, listening to them, encouraging action and checking back in, said Minister for Health and Aged Care Greg Hunt and Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention David Coleman.

TAS: Promoting good mental health and preventing suicide

Every death by suicide is a devastating loss - for children and parents, for friends, workmates, and for whole communities. It is important to recognise the reasons people take their own life are complex, and not always connected to mental illness - there can be a range of circumstances,' said Tasmanian Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing Jeremy Rockliff.

QLD: Time to remove NIP influenza barriers in QLD
The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) Queensland Branch calls for expanded access to National Immunisation Program (NIP) seasonal influenza vaccines through community pharmacy. At present, those over the age of 65 are not able to access the ATAGI-preferred influenza vaccine from their local pharmacy, as it has only been available through General Practice in recent years. PSA Queensland Branch President, Shane MacDonald, said that creating more opportunities for patients to access immunisations from pharmacists will improve the health and wellness of Queenslanders.

Landmark new medicines agreements to bring significant benefits for Australian patients
Minister for Health Greg Hunt
said that Australians will have more affordable, improved and guaranteed access to medicines under landmark long-term Strategic Agreements between the Government and Australia's medicines industry. The new five-year Strategic Agreements between the Government and Medicines Australia and the Generic and Biosimilar Medicines Association (GBMA) continue the close partnership with the medicines industry, which is integral to Australians accessing innovative life-saving and life-changing medicines, vaccines and other novel therapies. The COVID-19 global pandemic has cast a spot light on the importance of the Australian and global medicines supply chain and the Government has worked closely with the medicines industry over the past year to safeguard long term access to medicines for Australian patients.

Affordable medicine supplies secured for all Australian patients
The Generic and Biosimilars Medicines Association (GBMA) negotiated the new Strategic Agreement a year early, out of mutual concern for millions of vulnerable Australians, who are struggling to access their vital medicines. These 'at risk' medicines treat everything from infections, depression and anxiety to high cholesterol, hypertension and reflux. If not treated properly, these conditions can become very serious, very quickly. The Independent Chair of the GBMA, Ms Jane Halton AO PSM, said that Australia was in the midst of another frightening global, and national, surge of COVID-19 which 'pulled the curtain back on how vulnerable Australia was to international disruption of the supply of vital medicines.'

Leap forward for patients accessing medicines
Medicines Australia
has secured a 5-year Strategic Agreement with the Federal Government, centered on earlier patient involvement and influence in the availability of new medicines in Australia. The new Agreement sets out a hardworking, five-year plan that heralds a new era by securing stronger patient involvement in critical processes and ensuring Australia keeps pace with access to rapidly transforming medical advancements developed around the world. 'This Agreement, signed and supported by Minister Greg Hunt will ensure what is important to patients is a priority focus in creating faster access to lifesaving medicines and treatments,' said Dr Anna Lavelle, Chair of Medicines Australia.

Registration of interest
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) progressed work that would allow the provision of self-tests for COVID-19 in the future. Any change to the current prohibition on the supply of self or 'home' tests will require regulatory change. The timing of introduction of self-testing is critically dependent on achieving specific higher vaccination rates as outlined in the National Plan to Australia's COVID-19 response, and for the states and territories having established systems for reporting positive self-test results and directing individuals to have immediate PCR confirmatory tests. Government will determine the timing of introduction of self-testing.

Booster roll-out: Let's get it right
Now is the time for Federal and States governments to develop effective plans for the administration of booster vaccinations to ensure continuing protection against COVID-19, the Consumers Health Forum (CHF) said. The recent Government announcements of a boost to the supply of COVID-19 vaccines and the approval of the Moderna vaccine by TGA are very welcome, the CEO of the Consumers Health Forum, Leanne Wells, said. 'We know some countries are already commencing the administration of booster shots and that the Australian Government is expected to give the go-ahead in the next month.'

Statement on Moderna COVID-19 vaccine
Medicines Australia
welcomed the TGA provisional approval for the COVID-19 vaccine, Spikevax (Moderna) for Australia. The Moderna vaccine is expected to arrive in Australia this month. The TGA announced provisional approval for the Moderna vaccine in August and on Saturday, also provided provisional approval to include Australians between the ages of 12-17 years old. The Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines will both be made available to adolescents and be an important tool for Australia's social and economic recovery. 'The more people in Australia that get vaccinated, the more chance there is of eradicating the national COVID-19 pandemic,' said Elizabeth de Somer, CEO of Medicines Australia.

States must remove barriers to allow Pharmacists to administer Moderna to adolescents
The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) welcomed the confirmation from the National COVID Vaccine Taskforce that pharmacists will be administering Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine, Spikevax, to adolescents aged 12-15 years. With supply imminent, PSA now calls on states to immediately remove barriers, by updating their standards and regulations to allow this to happen. At present, vaccine regulations in Queensland, NSW and Tasmania prevent pharmacists from administering Spikevax to those aged between 12 and 17 years. PSA National President, A/Prof Chris Freeman, called for states to act fast to ensure pharmacists can get on with the job and administer COVID-19 vaccines in line with TGA approvals.

Cardiac complications of covid-19 'reassuringly' low
Clinical cardiac complications were 'reassuringly' uncommon among more than 600 patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19 in 2020, according to research published by the Medical Journal of Australia. Researchers from five Sydney hospitals and the University of Sydney, led by Dr Kunwarde Bhatia, a cardiology advanced trainee at Royal North Shore Hospital, analysed data from 644 consecutive patients included in the Australian Cardiovascular COVID-19 Registry by 28 January 2021. 'One hundred and twenty-five patients (19%) were admitted to intensive care units, and 70 patients (11%) required intubation; 92 patients (14%) died in hospital. Outcomes for 15 patients (2%) transferred to other hospitals were not known,' Bhatia and colleagues reported.

Modelling shows 85% full coverage needed to reach herd immunity
Australia's current 'mixed' COVID-19 vaccination program (vaccinating over 60s with AstraZeneca and under 60s with Pfizer) will not achieve herd immunity unless 85% of the population, including many 5-16 year-olds, are fully vaccinated. Researchers from James Cook University (JCU) and Monash University, led by Professor Emma McBryde, chair of Infectious Diseases Modelling and Epidemiology at JCU, published their modelling in the Medical Journal of Australia. 'Assuming a pre-vaccination effective reproduction number for the Delta variant of 5, we show the current 'mixed' program will not achieve herd immunity under 85% of full coverage,' McBryde and colleagues wrote.

Women urged to consider their health this Women's Health Week
Minister for Health Greg Hunt
said that: 'As we mark Women's Health Week, I continue to urge all Australian women to attend medical appointments and health checks, especially during lockdown. While COVID-19 remains a massive public health concern, women of all ages continue to battle personal health and medical issues. While many Australian women are increasingly using services such as telehealth, some medical issues still require a visit to their GP or specialist. Obtaining essential health care is one of the allowable reasons for leaving home during a lockdown. While some services have seen temporary interruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, our health system remains in a strong position to support Australian women with health challenges.'
