SYDNEY, November 23, 2010 – LexisNexis® Australia, a leading provider of content-enabled workflow solutions, today launched a new version of its publication Crime and Mental Health Law in New South Wales: A Practical Guide For Lawyers and Health Care Professionals, 2nd Edition, with the help of Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.
The book provides a practical guide to the law on mental health issues that arise within the criminal justice framework in New South Wales. The title’s lead authors, Dan Howard and Bruce Westmore, said they hoped that the book will assist professionals and laypersons to understand the way that the criminal justice system works for persons who have mental impairment.
“There is a greater need than ever for this understanding. We are pleased, on behalf of all who contributed to the book, to donate the royalties to the Schizophrenia Fellowship of NSW, whose tireless work to ease the burden of mental illness in the community is an inspiration to us all.”
Ms Moore officially launched the book at Town Hall with an assembly of legal practitioners and representatives from across the mental health law system. Ms Moore said, "Imprisonment can lead to significant family strain, lessens social cohesion and represents a massive social and economic cost to taxpayers.”
"A greater investment in diversion and rehabilitation is needed. By examining the links between crime and mental health, this book makes a valuable contribution to our understanding and points towards a more rational and more compassionate society."
‘Crime and Mental Health Law in New South Wales: A Practical Guide For Lawyers and Health Care Professionals’ offers comprehensive coverage and clear explanations of all of the important topics in this evolving field and is an ideal resource for those engaged in the fields of criminal law and forensic mental health, such as lawyers, mental health professionals and correctional health personnel.
The second edition sees full revision and updates to all chapters, including significant expansion in several areas. New to this edition are chapters on the management of forensic and correctional patients, infanticide, and a comprehensive chapter on the assessment and management of risk, including a section on the Crimes (Serious Sex Offenders) Act 2006. The operation of the Mental Health Act 2007 and the Mental Health (Forensic Provisions) Act 1990 is dealt with in detail.
Crime and Mental Health Law in New South Wales: A Practical Guide For Lawyers and Health Care Professionals, 2nd Edition, ISBN 9780409327083, is now available at the LexisNexis Store for purchase.
