SYDNEY, 10th August 2009
– LexisNexis Australia, a leading provider of content-enabled workflow solutions, today launched a pilot program introducing legislation e-books for use by legal professionals, law enforcement officers and law students. Subject to a successful pilot program, LexisNexis Australia will become the first publisher in Australia to offer lawyers a choice between printed texts and e-books for legislation.
LexisNexis’ e-book pilot brings unique benefits to the legal industry, aiding efficient and accurate legal research. Users are able to insert notes into the e-book, which can then be searched along with the e-book text, making for easier retrieval of information. The e-book also contains links to LexisNexis AU, a vast and reputable online research solution.
e-books are noted for their flexibility and ease of access. They are already popular for leisure reading, with Amazon Kindle, iPhone and iPod technologies enabling users to read books on their mobile devices. As this social technology grows in popularity, we can expect to see a knock on effect in terms of how law students and professionals conduct research.
While some businesses have been quick to pick up on the e-book trend, the legal industry has been slower to adopt. However, online technology is starting to change the way lawyers research, read and digest commentary and LexisNexis is focused on providing solutions to match.
“Customers are changing the way they access information. To meet those needs LexisNexis delivers business benefits through innovation. The e-book gives our customers another option to access world-class content. The e-book format is another way we bring clarity to information to help our customer reach essential insights and make the right decisions,” commented Theuns Viljoen, CEO LexisNexis Pacific.
The pilot e-book launched by LexisNexis today is called Butterworths Annotated Criminal Legislation, Victoria 2009 and is taken from Criminal Law Victoria, a highly regarded service which is available in loose-leaf and online on the LexisNexis AU research solution.
The criminal law focus will render this e-book valuable to government legal professionals such as prosecutors and the police, who will be able to access content on the move, without having to carry around heavy books.
The e-book resource is also for legal practitioners who can use it in court and when working remotely. In regional courts, which are often not equipped with internet access, e-books will provide an alternative source of information that can be downloaded onto a PC for reference.
In law faculties, time-poor students will find e-books a useful tool for more efficient studying. Law students indicate that they would use the e-book for exam preparation, to assist in developing summaries and for transplanting notes from assignment research. Another tremendous benefit is the copy and paste function – which allows students to transfer full text sections including page numbers. Knowing where copied text originates from is vital for both facilitating further research and avoiding plagiarism.
