When searching, do you ever have part of the search parameters required to complete a search?
For example if you are searching for a case you may only have a one party name and know generally what the case is about. In this situation you can use multiple fields in order to narrow your search with the information you have.

Want a faster way to narrow and review a large list of results?

Go to Result Groups on the left to narrow by Topics or Table of Contents

Enter an additional key word or phrase in the Narrow search field to search within your existing search

Order by relevance using the sort drop-down at the top of the list

Want to know what is in your subscription?
Click the Source Directory tab and view your full subscribed source list either by alphabetical list, or "Find", or by topic via "Browse"

Want to regularly run a particular search to stay current on changes in the law, news articles, etc?
Ask LexisNexis to automatically run a search and send you updated results via the alarm clock icon located on the results screen

Want to save items to review later?
Bookmark your results by selecting the result and clicking the “add to” link. Your results will be stored in the view folder at the top right hand corner of the screen for up to 24 hours.

Want to review research you completed earlier in the week?
Pull up searches you did a few days ago under the Research Manager tab within the history tab.

Want to see expert commentary discussing your case?
Click the “Commentary” tab and type your case name into the “References to Cases” field.

Want to find precedents containing a key clause?
Type the required language in the “search terms” field under the Forms tab below the red bar.

Want to browse a resource like you had the book on your desk?
Use the “browse” option in the My Sources section to provide an Index or Table of Contents of the publication

Want a larger list of results loading per page?
Click the “preferences” link in the top right-hand corner to display up to 100 results per page.

Want to see where particular terms are legally defined within Acts and Legislation?
From the “Legislation” tab under the red bar, type the desired word or phrase into the “Defined Terms” field.

Not finding the cases you think should be available using CaseBase?
When doing a term search in CaseBase, you are searching the catchwords and digest only – NOT the full text of the case. Thus, if looking for more unique terms or a fact pattern, change to searching in All Subscribed Cases to broaden your search.

Not finding your Act when typing it into the search box?
LexisNexis views a bracket as a space. Thus, when typing in an Act, if you place a word or letter in a bracket it creates a space in your search. Accordingly, leave off the brackets when searching by name of the Act and search free text.

Do you want to see what the catchwords within a case are to quickly decide whether it is relevant?
Click into view below the red bar and change it to list with catchwords and it will display the headnote.

Want to print/email/download the full unannotated version of an Act?
Click the Pdf link at the top of the page within the act.

Back button not working properly on LNAU?
Use the breadcrumb trail at the top left hand corner of your page to quickly navigate back from the right of the trail to the screen(s) leading up to the one where your original search was carried out.

Want more reading area on your screen?
Press F11 on your keyboard to hide toolbars, giving a full screen view for easier reading of documents.

Want to quickly share a document or list of results with a colleague?
Click the copy url option in the upper right to copy and share a link to your research. NOTE: recipient must be a Lexis subscriber to view results.

Do you ever need to take a portion of text to drop into another document?
Highlight the text you are wanting to download and then copy and paste into the document you are working on.

How to search for cases for a schedule of an Act?
Carry out a search from the legislation tab for the specific schedule, once in the schedule click the Express Search button which will then take you through to cases and commentary

Would you like to quickly access specific areas within LexisNexis AU?
Create Shortcuts into LexisNexis AU with our intranet tools. These intranet tools allow you to generate the HTML code for permanent links to LexisNexis AU such as an Act or Subordinate Legislation, a specific reported or unreported Case, and even the Table of Contents for a specific source. These links can be then be saved to your organisation's intranet site or on your Internet browser's favourites.
Note you must be a subscriber to LexisNexis AU to use these tools.

Not sure how the date range works?
The judgement date filter displays a range which is inclusive of the dates selected. These are Australian dates rather than US dates. You will be searching the judgment date, which is determined by the courts and entered directly into the documents.

Would you like a word/words to appear a minimum number of times in a document?
Using the ATLEAST command allows you to specify the number of times a word/words must appear in a document. For example, to find documents that contain an in-depth discussion of the Work Health Safety Act (WHS), Enter: atleast5 ( whs )
This search requires WHS to appear in every document at least 5 times. You can use any number from 1 to 255 with the ATLEAST command.

Need to find the equivalent ALR citation but you only have CLR information?
All you need to do is enter in the CLR citation information into Case field under Quick Find and select search.
Eg. 239 CLR 458 (which is for ICETV)
This will come back with the relevant case, along with the full CLR and ALR citations

Need to quickly assess the relevancy of your case results?
Change the view to "List with Catchwords" when working with results to searching cases. This allows you to gauge what the case is about before you even have to read the case document to determine its relevance to your research.

Not sure if the citation is (2009) NSWSC 43 or (2009) NSWSC 48?
Use a wildcard as part of your search, eg, 2009 NSWSC 4*

Need to search for phrases or legislation that contains the word "and" or "or"
Use quotation marks around your search string to locate that precise phrase or title. For example, "competition and consumer act" or "assault and battery".

Having difficulty remembering the correct spelling for a case name?
The truncator, or exclamation mark, can be used in the middle of a case name, for example if you type Po!ski, LexisNexis AU will bring back results including Polanski, Podolski etc

Do you need to find two words not as a phrase?
If you would like to separate a phrase you can use the NOT W/N connector. The NOT W/N connector will search for your two words separated by a number of words. You simply replace the n with a number below we have selected 5 words.
For example: enter in income not w/5 tax .

Do you need to quickly locate indexes in LexisNexis AU?
Quickly locate indexes in LNAU by selecting the Commentary Indexes/Tables or Services Indexes/Tables link from within the Commentary tab. Click the Sources dropdown arrow for index/table options which can be searched or browsed

Need to quickly locate important terms?
Searching by catchwords can help find cases on point as they are important terms and used in Casebase,law reports and unreported judgments. Add your terms to the contains text or catchword fields.However, catchwords can differ greatly between parallel citations, so look at them carefully to find more useful search terms and synonyms.

Ever wanted to be up to date with the latest legal developments but don't want the Scheduled Search flooding your inbox?
Click on the Copy Results Link icon after you perform your search, copy and paste the link into the URL address of your internet browser, and save it to your favourites. You can then repeat the search from your internet browser for future reference.

Need to quickly understand the content sources of the Australian Law Reports?
Simply click on the i icon next to the Australian Law Reports located within the My Sources section of the LexisNexis AU home page. This will outline the ALR's source information to include All High Court cases, Important Federal Court cases, Significant judgments from the State Supreme Courts exercising federal jurisdiction, Selected cases from the ACT Supreme Court, Selected cases from the NT Supreme Court and Selected decisions from Federal Tribunals

Need to quickly locate cases on a section of an Act?
Use the Quick Find section on the homepage and search using the the full title of the Act, including the jurisdiction and year.This helps to prevent results appearing where an Act may have the same title as an Act in anotherjurisdiction or where Acts with the same title were enacted in the same year in different jurisdictions. Eg, when looking for Criminal Code Act 1899 (QLD) s 617
Alternatively you can use the Case tab or Casebase and use the w/p connector Eg, type “Criminal Code Act 1899 (QLD)” w/p 617

Do you need to find two words that appear as a phrase seperately?
In LNAU you can use the not w/n or not w/s or not w/p connectors. For example, if I wanted to find income tax as two separate words and ensure the word tax is at least within 5 words of income, I can type in income not w/5 tax

Need to know when ASX Listing Rules are updated without the need to actively search?
Simply browse the Table of Contents for ASX Listing Rules and select the plus sign next to it. This will reveal Currency, check the box next to Currency. Next, select Search in the upper left-hand corner which will bring up the search template. In Search Terms type Listing and then click Search. Lastly, save this as an alert using the Alarm clock icon in the top right-hand corner.

Need to quick overview of the content within your results?
Selecting List with Catchwords on your results page allows you to quickly see your key terms in context. To do this, simply select List with Catchwords in the View drop-down on the results page.

Need to search a specific section within a document?
On the LNAU search form, expand the Show options to search specific docuement sections. Click on the Search within dropdown and select your desired section eg: Defined-terms. Type in a word or phrase into the Using Terms field eg: jury. Click the blue Add to Search button. This will now appear in the Search Terms field. Click Search. This will find all occassions where the word Jury has been defined accross the LNAU resources.
